The Big Payback

“Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, ‘I will take revenge; I will pay them back,’ says the LORD” – Romans 12:19 NLT

In James Brown’s hit single, The Big Payback, he says:

Got to, got to payback
Revenge, I'm mad
Got to get back, I need some get-back
Payback, payback

When people do you wrong, talk about you, use you, betray you and abuse you – do you seek payback? Do you allow the need for revenge to alter the way you act, speak and think?

It is natural for us as humans to want to payback wrong for wrong. I know I did when I was falsely accused of a crime and seemingly lost everything – my freedom, reputation, and livelihood. I spent nearly two years wanting revenge on all those I deemed to have done me wrong. Simply put, I wanted payback.

What others have done to you may not be as traumatic as what I went through, but your feelings of resentment are the same. The spouse you thought you were going to spend the rest of your life with may have walked out on you. The employer you gave so much of your time to may have laid you off. The family member you love may have taken some money from you. The best friend you shared your secrets with may have betrayed your trust. Whatever it is that has brought you to a place of anger, offense, hatred and revenge – let it go. It is not worth another tear, another sleepless night or another argument because what you want, only God can give you.

Do not say, “I will do to him as he has done to me; I will pay the man back for what he has done.” – Proverbs 24:29 ESV

What you want is to feel whole again. What you want is to feel loved again. What you want is to feel appreciated again. What you want is to be at peace again. Those who hurt you cannot give you any of those things you desire. No apology can replace the days you lost. No amount of money can replace the peace you lost. No restitutions can replace what was taken from you, but God can.

God knows what you lost, who betrayed and hurt you and He will repay you. He will give you beauty for ashes, joy for mourning and praise for the spirit of heaviness (Isaiah 61:3). What God gives you may not come in the form of what you lost, but it will always be better.

“Instead of your shame you will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace you will rejoice in your inheritance. And so, you will inherit a double portion in your land, and everlasting joy will be yours.” – Isaiah 61:7 NIV

So, do not take it on yourself to repay a wrong. Trust the LORD and He will make it right (Proverbs 20:22). God will restore you on this side of Heaven; you will not have to wait to receive your inheritance. Do not worry about those who hurt you, God will take care of them – just forgive and get yourself ready to sit at the table He is preparing for you in the presence of those who lied on, betrayed, stole from and harmed you.

“Don't be hateful and insult people just because they are hateful and insult you. Instead, pay back with a blessing, because a blessing is what God promised to give you when he called you.” – 1 Peter 3:9 CEV

Prep Time

“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that is in you.” – 1 Peter 3:15 NIV

Are you ready to receive all the things God has promised you? Are you ready for the breakthrough, relationship, finances, job and family you prayed for? Now, ask yourself this: are you prepared to receive all the things you proclaim to be ready for?

Spiritual preparation is the process in which we make ourselves available for use by God. We all say that we are ready to receive the abundant life He promised us (John 10:10) but oftentimes we are not prepared to receive His blessings. Impatience, pride, laziness and the opinions of others frequently deters us from planning. A blessing without preparation can easily become a burden that overwhelms us.

Burdensome Blessing

And [Jesus] said, “There was a man who had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. So, he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything.  – Luke 15:11-16 ESV

Our blessings can become a burden when we fail to prepare and allow ourselves to be driven by lust, greed and selfish ambitions. Do not squander your blessings in reckless living and unreliable people. That is what happens when we enter into a relationship, business arrangement or position without preparation – we eventually lose it and ourselves in the process.

When the prodigal son was enjoying the excesses of this world, his father was patiently waiting on him to return and when he did, he proclaimed, “[my son] was dead and has come back to life! He was lost, but now he is found (Luke 15:32).” Even if you wasted an opportunity in the past, God, whose mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:23) can still redeem you. Like this father, He is willing to wait and extend His love to you even if you make your lot amongst the pigs.

Build the Boat

When Noah began building the Ark, those around him probably did not understand what he was doing or why he was doing it. Noah was preparing for something that had never been seen before. His obedience and preparation were rewarded when the rain began. As God positions you, be ready for people to ridicule and dismiss you because they do not know or understand the plans God has for you.

In the face of scrutiny and uncertainty build your boat. Build the life you want. Build the relationship you desire. Build the family you envisioned. Build the business you imagined. Boat building will require discipline, obedience and sacrifice but when God opens the windows of Heaven for you and rain down a blessing – you will be ready, the blessing will not overwhelm you.

People will make judgements of you based off of squandered opportunities, failed relationships and appearances but the Lord looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). The things people do not see – the long nights and sacrifices you made, the tears, praying and planning you put into the pursuit of your calling is what God honors. Do not allow your lack of preparation to delay what God wants to give you. The time between your calling and its manifestation should be used preparing for everything you are trusting and believing God for. God does the planning (Jeremiah 29:11); but it is our responsibility to do the preparing.

New Year, Same Devil

Plan carefully and you will have plenty; if you act too quickly, you will never have enough.
– Proverbs 21:5 GNT

According to studies, 80 percent of New Year Resolutions fail by February. They fail because we make vision boards but do not follow through with action plans. It is a new year, but the same devil is still prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour, manipulate, deceive and destroy. Your enemy uses coordinated attacks against you. How can you defeat an organized foe if you are unorganized?

While the calendar may change, many of the same problems from last year will attempt to define you this year. In order to truly see a difference in your life, you are going to have to be disciplined, transformed and fearless.

Discipline

“For the Spirit that God has given us does not make us timid; instead, his Spirit fills us with power, love, and self-control.” – 2 Timothy 1:7 GNT

As Christians, it is our responsibility to develop the discipline God has given us - so that when the enemy attacks, we do not give into our fears, worries, doubts or temptations. Create boundaries in your personal, spiritual and emotional lives and do not hesitate to enforce those boundaries. That may mean separating from some of your plans and relationships that feel good but are not good for you. Discipline requires you to sacrifice short-term satisfaction for long-term gains, or as Joyce Meyer put it, “discipline enables you to think first and act second.”

Transform

“All of us, then, reflect the glory of the Lord with uncovered faces; and that same glory, coming from the Lord, who is the Spirit, transforms us into his likeness in an ever-greater degree of glory.” - 2 Corinthians 3:18 GNT

It is said that the only constant in life is change. Yes, change is good. Seasons change, styles change (thank goodness), and people change. The only problem with change is that it is often temporary. Seasons change back, styles are recycled, and people will revert back to harmful actions. To flourish in this season of your life, you are going to have to transform. Spiritual transformation is an internal conversion of your thoughts, attitudes and behaviors that reflect the teachings of Christ. Do not conform yourselves to the standards of this world, but let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind. Then you will be able to know the will of God--what is good and is pleasing to him and is perfect (Romans 12:2). God can change you, but transformation is a decision you must make.

Fearless

The LORD is for me, so I will have no fear. What can man do to me? – Psalm 118:6 NLT

Stop negotiating with negative thoughts, pessimistic people and destructive behaviors over your future. Take the shackles off your potential and trust that God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). Take a chance and bet on yourself this year, not succumbing to your fears or doubts but leaning into the God given potential that is within you.

I am so happy for the things God is about to do in your life. Your business will thrive, your promotion is imminent, your health is improving, and your joy is returning. Embrace all God has for you by being disciplined, transformed and fearless. The devil is the same, but the blessings will be new.
