To the victor belong the spoils is a well-known military phrase which means the winner of a war is entitled to all the spoils (rewards, bonuses or benefits of success). "When you go to war against your enemies, do not be afraid of them, because the LORD your God will be with you. He is the one who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” God does not want us to worry about how we are going get the victory, He wants us to start planning on how we are going to use the spoils.
The Victor:
“The LORD brought his people out of Egypt, loaded with silver and gold; and not one among the tribes stumbled.” – Psalm 105:37
When God delivered the Israelites out of Egypt, they did not leave empty handed. Even before He parted the Red Sea and gave the Israelites the victory over the Egyptians, God blessed them with the spoils. The Israelites did as Moses instructed and asked the Egyptians for silver and gold and for clothing. The LORD had made the Egyptians favorably disposed toward the people, and they gave them what they asked for; so they plundered the Egyptians. He has done the same for you. Whatever obstacles you are facing today, know that God has already planned your way of escape. His favor is upon you and the hardships, lost, and disappointment standing before you today will be the very thing God uses to prosper you tomorrow.
The Spoils:
“Goliath stood and shouted… Choose a man and have him come down to me. If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects… David asked the men standing near him, ‘What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine…?’ They replied, ‘The king will give great wealth to the man who kills him. He will also give him his daughter in marriage and will exempt his family from taxes in Israel.’” – 1 Samuel 17:8-9 & 25 - 26
The giants in our lives are often loud and intimidating. When faced with the prospect of fighting Goliath, David was not afraid. The first thing David did was ask about the spoils because he knew that the LORD our God himself will fight for us and if God be with us, He is more than the world against us. So, whatever you are facing right now, be like David and declare to your problems that, “You may come against me, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty… This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands… All will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is not mine, it’s the Lord’s…”.
Prepare for your victory. You may be in the middle of a lost but start planning for tomorrow. You may be unemployed but start preparing for your next job. You may be debt-ridden but start budgeting for the overflow. They may have abandoned you but get yourself ready for the person God has for you. The battle is the Lord’s, but the victory and all the spoils are yours!
