The Lies We Tell Ourselves

Truthful words stand the test of time but lies are soon exposed.” – Proverbs 12:19

During difficult times we often speak things over our lives that are not of God. The words we proclaim have the power of life and death and our enemy wants us to declare depression, anxiety, anger and fear, but the Devil is a liar who has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies. He wants us to believe that we are condemned, unloved and unwanted by God and he uses lies of deception, lies of convenience and lies of the flesh to accomplish his goals.

Lies of Deception:

“You will certainly not die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from [the tree] your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” … Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” – Genesis 3: 4,5 & 13

We allow ourselves to tell lies of deception and manipulation to not only fulfill our own selfish desires but to also find comfort in a false reality. Telling someone you love them because of the emotional, physical or financial support you can receive from them is wrong. Additionally, convincing yourself that someone who constantly uses and abuses you, loves you is foolish. We deceive and allow ourselves to be manipulated when searching for things (love, happiness, purpose, etc.) only God can give us. So, let no one deceive you with empty words and do not deceive yourself.

Lies of Convenience:
When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” “Sir,” the [disabled man] replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.” – John 5: 6-7

I do not have the time, I do not have the money, no one will help me, I am not smart enough, what if I fail, are all common lies of convenience we tell ourselves when we lack the faith to believe that God will bless us. With God all things are possible, all we must do is believe and strain towards what is ahead of us (victory, healing and deliverance). Fixing our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. You will know you are on the right path when the enemy is lying to you, trying to convince you to quit and abort the plans God has for you. When in doubt, move forward knowing God has already made a way for you.

Lies of the Flesh:

“… the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”
– Matthew 4: 8-9

If the lies of deception and convenience fail to bring us down the enemy will tell his greatest lie – that if we turn away from God, he will give us our hearts desires. What he is really doing is appealing to our flesh trying to convince us to exchange our salvation for sex, money, power and admiration. The enemy will offer us the world with all its evil. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Stand firm in your faith. Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and He will [elevate] you.

What the enemy says about you is a lie and what other people say about you doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is what God says about you and He says you are loved, you are not condemned,  you are forgiven, victorious, healed, blessed and favored. So, when the enemy comes at you with his lies, humble yourself before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
