Staying Power

“Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back. Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.” – Ruth 1:16 NLT

My wife likes to say, “God gives each of us the grace to be with our spouses.” I am thankful for the grace God has given her to be with me because I do not know many people who would be willing to withstand what she has had to endure in our relationship. If your spouse or partner were jailed, falsely accused of a crime, derided in the media, unemployed and broke – would you have the power to stay?

I would like to think that my wife has remained by my side because she made a vow to do so for better or worse, but even before our marriage, when I got knocked down she was there to pick me up. There are some people God places in our lives to show us what His love, compassion and mercy looks like.

Hold On:

“… Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye, but Ruth clung to her.” – Ruth 1:14

After Naomi’s husband and sons died, she was left widowed with her two daughters-in-law: Orpah and Ruth. She encouraged them to leave and return to their homelands. They both protested but Naomi insisted, so Orpah left but Ruth stayed. Sometimes it takes a death, a hurtful and disappointing experience to show us who is really with us.

When you are going through a difficult season, there will be people who walk away from you because you can no longer help them or because they think they know how your story is going to end but if they can easily leave you in your time of need then they were never with you to begin with.

It would have been easier for Ruth to leave just as Orpah did, and it might be easy for you to walk away from your family, friends and spouse too, but God blesses those willing to endure.  Patient endurance is what you need, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that He has promised (Hebrews 10:36).

Relationships:

“A relationship is more than an experience... A wedding is an experience, a marriage is a relationship. Having a baby is an experience, raising a child is a relationship. People look for experiences, but God is calling you to relationships.” – T.D. Jakes

Enduring a rough period with a loved one does not mean remaining in a toxic, hurtful or abusive relationship. You should definitely walk away from people who seek to use and manipulate you. What it does mean, is recognizing God’s presence in your healthy relationships.

God blesses us through our relationships. Before you can enter into a meaningful relationship with anyone else, you must first establish a relationship with God. You cannot have a fruitful relationship with others if you do not have a productive relationship with God because every new relationship brings a new responsibility. By developing a relationship with God first, you will then be able to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy connections.

Reward:

“May the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge, reward you fully for what you have done.” – Ruth 2:12

Therefore, invest in those positive relationships and people God put in your life. Uplift others when they are discouraged, support them in their time of need and love them when no one else does. God restored and blessed Ruth with extraordinary favor because of her staying power and He will do the same for you if you do not walk away too soon.

Perfect Timing

"My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune.” – John 7:6 NASB

One of the biggest impediments to receiving the promises of God is our reluctance to start. Oftentimes, we convince ourselves that the environment has to be right or that we should feel a certain way before pursuing the things that God has placed on our hearts and minds. If you are waiting on the right feeling or perfect time to become all God has made you to be then you will be waiting forever because your time is now!

Finish What You Start:

“But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus    —the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.” - Acts 20:24 NLT

The enemy is not threatened by you starting, what scares him the most is you finishing because better is the end of a thing than its beginning (Ecclesiastes 7:8). He is aware of your potential and he knows that if God can complete the good work that He has begun inside you (Philippians 1:6), then glory will be given unto the Lord. So, he first tries to convince you not to start, to wait and if that fails, he tries to convince you to quit, to give up on your dreams, to settle in comfort and convenience. Therefore, remain on guard [and finish what you start], so that you will not lose what you have worked for, but will receive your reward in full (2 John 1:8).

Small Beginnings:

“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin…”
- Zechariah 4:10 NLT

All great things begin small. So, do not be dismayed or discouraged if your business is not flourishing, if the career has yet to takeoff or if the relationship has not been as fruitful as expected. God takes delight in the faith you have to start even though you do not know what the end will be. Avoid judging your progress by someone else’s relationship, finances, clothes, job or followers. Instead, continue to pursue God’s perfect plan for your life. For His word guides us and where God guides, He provides prosperity, peace, love and joy.

If you were waiting on the right time to go back to school, the time is now! If you were waiting on the right time to repair a relationship, the time is now! If you were waiting on the right time to relocate, the time is now! If you were waiting on the right time to start a business, the time is now! If you were waiting on the right time to get healthy, the time is now! If you were waiting on the right time to commit yourself to Christ, the time is now!

This is your time. This is your moment.

Soft Target

3/26/2020

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it more abundantly.” – John 10:10 ESV

Soft targets are places that are easily accessible with little to no protection, making them susceptible to an attack. Spiritually, our soft targets are vulnerable areas in our lives that the enemy tries to exploit. Substance abuse, sex, gossip, unforgiveness, jealousy, selfishness and anxiety are all soft targets. Our enemy attacks us where we are weak and tries to use our weakness to separate us from God’s love.

“For I am certain that nothing can separate us from God’s love: neither death nor life, neither angels nor other heavenly rulers or powers, neither the present nor the future, neither the world above nor the world below—there is nothing in all creation that will ever be able to separate us from the love of God which is ours through Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 8:38-39 GNT

As believers, we strengthen those areas in which we are weak through preparation, discipline and agility.

Prepare: The enemy begins each attack with a thought. You have the affair, use the drugs, spend the money, fear and quit in your mind before it manifests itself in your life. Do not wait for the enemy to attack you, prepare in advance to combat the assault, that means not being conformed to this world, but being transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:8). We renew our minds by meditating on God’s word. So, when the enemy attacks you with negative thoughts and feelings you can defend yourself with the word of God.

Discipline: To fortify those soft targets in your life, you are going to have to be disciplined. If you know talking to someone or consuming certain substances, images, music, etc. elicits a negative reaction from you then change your routine and habits in order to stay away from those adverse things and people. Create a new way of living that will bring you closer to God. That may mean giving up on some things and people that make you feel good but is not good for you. No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it is painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way (Hebrews 12:11).

Agility: When you begin to change and make progress in your life the enemy will alter the way he attacks you and you must be agile enough to change your defenses. If he can no longer tempt you through money, then he may try to tempt you with sex. If he can’t tempt you with drugs and alcohol, then he will come at you in your health. If he can no longer defeat you in your thinking, then he will come at you in your relationships. Guard against new attacks by remaining faithful to God and remembering that the same God who saved, healed and delivered you before will do it again.

We are more than conquerors in Christ Jesus and no attack of the enemy will prevail against us if we remain prepared, disciplined and agile.

Panic Room

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. – Psalm 46:1

A panic room is a secure room within a residence that provides shelter in the case of an invasion or attack. We all have internal panic rooms. When you are under attack, what room do you run to? Some of us seek shelter in sex, drugs and alcohol while others seek refuge in gossip, overeating, frivolous spending and complaining. No matter what you may be facing, God wants you to seek and find shelter in Him during times of trouble. The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

The enemy’s attack is relentless, and oftentimes we respond to his attack by taking refuge in rooms of familiarity, regret and carnality.

Rooms of Familiarity: When the Israelites escaped slavery and began their journey to the Promise Land, many of them started to complain at the first hint of adversity. They would rather go back to bondage than receive the blessings God had for them because slavery, depression, negativity and fear was familiar. Starting anew is difficult, but remember God is a God of increase, not decrease. Meaning the opportunity ahead of you is better than what is behind you. So when you are feeling angry, afraid, depressed and discouraged do not run back to what you left behind, instead trust and believe God when He says; No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for you.

Rooms of Regret: Another room we retreat to when under attack are rooms of regret. What would have happened if I had taken that job? How would my life be different if I had stayed in that relationship? What would my life be like if I had moved to pursue that opportunity? Regret is a tool that the enemy uses against us to fix our focus on what could have been, instead of what is and is to come. If you find yourself living in regret remember that you are loved, forgiven, blessed and favored by God, the author and perfecter of your faith. The plans He has for you are greater than any of your past mistakes. Forget what is behind and reach toward what lies ahead.

Rooms of Carnality: The most common rooms we build are rooms of carnality or rooms of the flesh. When under distress, it feels good satisfying the flesh. The sex, alcohol and high feels good. The donut tastes good. Disparaging others who may be struggling makes you feel like you are doing better than them. But when the high subsides you are still left with your problems and yourself. The only way to escape this room is through Christ, for if you have Him you will never thirst again. He will be all you want and need. The LORD will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring.

Tear down those rooms of familiarity, regret and carnality and instead seek refuge in the only room that matters – the room of salvation. In that room we find our victory and peace.

Opportunity Cost

“I am now giving you the choice between life and death, between God's blessing and God's curse, and I call heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Choose life.” – Deuteronomy 30:19 GNT

In economics, the term "opportunity cost," is a fancy phrase for "trade-off." Every time you make a choice, there is a trade-off to consider. With each decision you make, you have to analyze what you are gaining as well as what you may be giving up.

What trade-offs to Christ have you chosen recently? The time we spend complaining, worrying, fearing and doubting is time we are not using communing with God. The more time we spend with God, the less time we spend in unhappiness, uncertainty and grief.

When making any decision, choose to come before God boldly and with confidence (1 John 5:14) believing that He is your source. Trust that He will supply all your needs (Philippians 4:19) and provide you with a surplus.

Source:

“… but those who drink the water that I will give them will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give them will become in them a spring which will provide them with life-giving water and give them eternal life." – John 4:14 ESV

God is our source. When we make people our source, we become sad when they ultimately leave us. When we make money our source, we become depressed when we do not have it. When we make drugs, alcohol and sex our source we become despondent when the high is over. But when we make God our source, we will never run out of love, hope and happiness.

Supply:

“And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from His glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.” - Philippians 4:19 NIV

When we find ourselves in need financially, emotionally and spiritually we oftentimes seek worldly solutions to Godly problems. Our unbelief and impatience can lead to bad decisions. Before we were formed in the womb, God knew what we would need at this exact moment in our lives (Jeremiah 1:5). So, do not be angry by God’s perceived absence and do not take His presence for granted. Our heavenly Father knows what we need and will provide for us if we only believe (Matthew 6:32).

Surplus:

“Indeed, you will receive a full measure, a generous helping, poured into your hands--all that you can hold.” – Luke 6:38 GNT

With God as our source and supplier, our responsibility shifts from trying to figure out how we are going to survive the pain and disappointment to figuring out how we are going to use the surplus of blessings God is about to bestow upon us. In all you do, honor the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce, then your life will be filled with plenty, and you will receive an overflow of God’s goodness (Proverbs 3:10).

It costs to be you. There are some things that you have survived that would have killed someone else. Therefore, choose to live your life in a manner that will bring glory to the God who has brought you this far.

Currency Exchange

“So, get rid of your old self, which made you live as you used to—the old self that was being destroyed by its deceitful desires. Your hearts and minds must be made completely new, and you must put on the new self, which is created in God's likeness and reveals itself in the true life that is upright and holy.” – Ephesians 4:22 – 24 GNT

My wife and I love traveling internationally. Every time we travel to a different country, we exchange American currency for that of the country which we are visiting. Depending on the country, the value of the dollar will either appreciate (gain in value) or depreciate (decrease in value). As Christians, we make daily exchanges – some strengthen us while others weaken us.

Bishop Lester Love once said, “The currency of Heaven is favor. Favor can get you what money cannot buy you.” So, what have you traded your favor, salvation and peace for?

Our responsibility is to be cognizant of what we are exchanging with God and man. In order to get the most value out of your exchanges you’re going to have to determine your destination, check conversion rates and spend what you have.

Destination:

“The LORD guides us in the way we should go and protects those who please Him.”
– Psalm 37:23

When planning a trip, you must first determine your destination. Where you are going, will determine what you will need. If you are traveling aimlessly without a set destination in mind, you will find yourself living without direction, being tossed back and forth by situation and circumstances (Ephesians 4:14). As believers, we have to plan and choose where we want to go and who we want to follow. When we choose to travel with God, He directs our path and show us the righteous way to go.

Conversion Rate:

“Great is His faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each morning.”
– Lamentations 3:23

Your daily exchanges will either add to you or subtract from you. When you give your time to people who do not deserve it, you will find yourself living in offense and anger when they do not reciprocate the same actions. When you give your time to pursuing God’s plan for your life, you will find yourself living in peace and happiness. What we exchange God’s truth for determines the type of life we will live. The enemy wants us to exchange our favor for fear, our faith for doubt and God’s mercies for condemnation. Do not exchange God’s truth for the lies of the enemy.

Spend It:

“Give to others, and God will give to you. Indeed, you will receive a full measure, a generous helping, poured into your hands--all that you can hold. The measure you use for others is the one that God will use for you." – Luke 6:38

God’s provision is in today, not in your past or your tomorrow. Do not try to hold onto the blessings of yesterday because God wants to do a new thing in your life today. Use the time God has given you to pursue the purpose He has for you. Use the love God has put inside of you to encourage others. Use the position He has placed you in to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than you. Spend what God has given you today without the fear of running out.

Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do, I give to you (John 14:27).” Instead of exchanging your peace for depression, grief and doubt – exchange your depression, grief and doubt for God’s peace, love, plan and purpose for your life.

The Long Goodbye

1/27/2020

Picture
“Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.” – James 4:14

Life is one long goodbye. Meaning, as we live and grow older, we will eventually have to say goodbye to the people we love and things we once enjoyed doing. In the Life of Pi, Yann Martel wrote, “I suppose in the end, the whole of life becomes an act of letting go, but what always hurts the most is not taking a moment to say goodbye.”

So, how do you say goodbye? Do you take offense easily and hold on to petty grudges? Do you tear people down with your words and actions or place your value into superficial things? Do you say goodbye by telling those close to you that you love them? Do you build others up? Do you forgive those who hurt you? Do you spend time with your loved ones? Do you give back and help others in need? Our everyday behaviors, words, and actions throughout our lives is how we say goodbye.

As Christians, we say goodbye in three distinctive ways: by serving, loving, and forgiving.

Serving:

"Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.” - Mark 9:35

As I have previously shared, my father died at the age of 37, when I was two years old. His passing has always stayed with me, and because of it, I sometimes suffer from death anxiety. I fear dying prematurely. That fear is based on the belief that one must live a long life in order to have lived a significant one. A long life does not equate to significance; our service does. We oftentimes think that we must be rich, famous, or have a certain number of followers in order to serve and have influence. God has given each of us a gift from His great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever (1 Peter 4:11)! Your service matters! When you serve others, do it with a pure heart, seeking effectiveness and not fame.

Loving:

“Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins.” - 1 Peter 4:8

When we love and express that love to others, it is as close as we can get to God here on earth. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love (1 John 4:8). Do not withhold your love from others. Do not let a day go by where you do not express your love to those God has placed in your life. Invest the time, send the text message, make the phone call, take the trip, and yes, give the money – do not take this current moment for granted because tomorrow is promised to none of us.

Forgiving:

“And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.” - Mark 11:25

How unfortunate it is to live a life of unforgiveness and offense when God in His love has forgiven you for your sins, mistakes, and trespasses against Him. Forgiving is not about staying in a toxic relationship or letting people hurt you. It is about not holding onto that hurt to the point where it disconnects you from God’s blessings.

Martel also wrote, “It's important in life to conclude things properly. Only then can you let go. Otherwise, you are left with words you should have said but never did, and your heart is heavy with remorse.” Life is short and fragile, filled with many highs and lows, but by serving, loving, and forgiving others, we make it meaningful and purpose-filled.

How do you say goodbye?

Foreign and Domestic

Picture
“When you make a promise to God, do not delay in following through, for God takes no pleasure in fools. Keep all the promises you make to Him.” – Ecclesiastes 5:4 NLT

The Oath of Allegiance of the United States (U.S.) is the official oath that must be taken by every permanent resident who wishes to become a U.S. citizen. Those who take this oath, promise to disavow all prior allegiances and to defend the United States against all enemies both foreign and domestic.

As Christians, we made an oath with Heaven when we confessed with our mouth and believed in our heart that Jesus is Lord, who died for our sins at Calvary and arose three days later. As now citizens of Heaven, it is our responsibility to renounce our old way of living and defend the promises we made before God against foreign (external) and domestic (internal) attacks.

Foreign Attacks:

“Be alert, be on watch! Your enemy, the Devil, roams around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” – 1 Peter 5:8 GNT

Foreign attacks are those negative people, hurtful and difficult situations and setbacks we all encounter. The betrayal, separation, layoff and death have a way of making us feel like God has abandoned us. God never said that we would not face adversity and hardships, but He did promise that no attack of the enemy shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17). Be open to the many ways God delivers you from the enemy’s attacks. Answered prayers do not always come how we imagined. Therefore, when you find yourself under a foreign attack, facing a situation that you never expected, remember that God has already supplied you with the strength, intellect and courage you need to be victorious.

Domestic Attacks:

“To be controlled by human nature results in death; to be controlled by the Spirit results in life and peace.” – Romans 8:6 GNT

Domestic attacks are our own negative beliefs and behaviors. Our negative thoughts produce negative words and negative actions. The enemy takes delight when we do his job for him. He wants us to quit, to feel unloved and condemned but there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). God knows you, not who you pretend to be but the real you. The you who lacks confidence. The you who feels like quitting. The you who hides your pain behind a smile. The you who curses, drinks and passes judgement on others. He knows you and still chooses to love you. He still has a plan specifically for you. So, when the internal attacks bring you down and makes you feel like giving up, seek God and place your faith in Him.

“Those who trust in the LORD will renew their strength; they will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not become weary, they will walk and not faint.” - Isaiah 40:31

When you feel yourself under external and internal attacks, fall back on God’s word and remember, though many are against you, God will redeem you from the enemy’s attacks unharmed (Psalm 55:18).

Workout Plan

“Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:8

It took ten months of intermittent fasting and exercise for me to start seeing a notable change in my physical appearance. While I was excited with my weight loss, after months of training I reached a weight-loss plateau. My routine of fasting and exercising was no longer effective because my body adjusted. The only way I could continue my physical progression was to change my routine. The same is true spiritually, when we get stuck in a routine, the enemy can adjust how he attacks us, therefore limiting our spiritual effectiveness.

Every year, millions of Americans pledge themselves to a diet and/or exercise routine in order to lose weight and improve their outward appearance. While dieting and exercising is important for a variety of health reasons, it is equally important for us to improve our inner self. From His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being. When we feed our flesh and starve our spirit, we become spiritually unhealthy. Fortunately, God has developed a plan for those who trust and believe in Him. To make spiritual gains with God, we are going to have to diversify, diet and rest.

Diversify: An effective fitness routine will incorporate cardio, upper body and lower body training. If you just focus and train one area of your body, you will gain strength in that area, but you will become weak in others. Diversifying your spiritual routine is equally as important. Routine makes us an easy target for the enemy’s attack. If he knows our routine, he will send distractions to interrupt the time we allocate towards God. If you pray but do not walk in faith, attend church but do not tithe or read your Bible but do not praise and worship God, then you will be strengthening some areas in your spiritual life while remaining weak in others. Pledge to spend more time with God and try some new things spiritually. Read a daily devotional, subscribe to a spiritual podcast, partake in Holy communion, join a prayer/church group, start a Bible study or read a spiritual book. Seek God on a level like you never have before, and you will begin to see changes throughout your life.

Dieting: When we ingest more calories than we burn we gain weight. Similarly, when we consume negative and destructive images, speech, and people and don’t offset that with God’s word, we gain stress, fear, anxiety, doubt and hopelessness. Learn to eliminate these things and people in your life that add weight but do not make you a healthier person. The more you seek and pursue God and His Kingdom and burn off the excess things and people keeping you away from God, the healthier you will become in your Spirit.

Rest: Resting is just as important as working out because it’s an equal part of the total process required to build strength, endurance, and muscle. No matter what you may be going through, find the time to rest. Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” So, cast your cares unto Him and find your rest. Let God rebuild and restore you as you grow your faith into Him.

God wants to do some amazing things for you this year and fulfill the plans He has for you. Plans to forgive, restore and prosper you, plans to give you hope and a future. To receive all God has for you, diversify how you seek Him, eliminate unhealthy habits and people,  and find rest in the Almighty.

Rock Bottom

12/17/2019

“I wait quietly before God, for my victory comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will never be shaken.” – Psalm 62:1-2

Most likely, the thing(s) you are worried about today will not be the thing(s) that disrupts your life tomorrow. It is the unexpected diagnosis, layoff, expense, separation or death that will shatter your preconceived notion of how your life was supposed to be into a million different pieces. In those shattered pieces, we try to make meaning of our life.

I remember the exact moment when I hit rock bottom. I was sitting in a jail cell and had just gotten off the phone with my wife. She had informed me that our daughter would have to be temporarily removed from our home. In that moment, I lost my will to go on. I felt angry, depressed, shame and abandoned by God. Your rock bottom may not have come in a jail cell, but the feelings at the bottom are the same.

“But in my distress, I cried out to the LORD; yes, I cried to my God for help. He heard me from his sanctuary; my cry reached his ears.” - 2 Samuel 22:7

God Has Not Forgotten About You: God is never late but He is rarely early. Just ask Lazarus. When word got to Jesus that Lazarus; the one whom He loved, was sick, Jesus did not leave immediately. He instead took four days to go to him, and by the time He arrived, Lazarus was dead. There is something that you have had to endure where you believe that if God is who He says He is, then the thing that hurt you would not have happened. Nothing is truly dead if your faith remains in Christ, for He is the resurrection and the life (John 11:25). Like Lazarus, God has not forgotten about you. He knows your pain, He wants to resurrect you, call you out and give you a new beginning if you just have faith and believe in Him.

Your Destiny is at the Bottom: At the bottom, I lost my freedom, job, daughter and money. But I found out who I am and most importantly whose I am. What you are currently going through and what you lost in the last season of your life has no bearings on what God is about to do for you. Joseph was betrayed by his brothers and thrown into a pit, but God was with him and at the bottom of that pit, God began to take the things that were meant to harm him and use them for his good (Genesis 50:20). God strips away all the trivial things we tend to value in this world so that we can find the true value and purpose that lies within us.

Jesus is the Rock at the Bottom: When a disabled man sought Jesus for healing but could not get close to Him, his friends cut a hole in the roof where Jesus was teaching and lowered the man before Christ. The lower the man went, the closer he got to Jesus and the further he got from those who brought him. Learn to let go of what has brought you to this point if it is not of God. Let go of the grief, sadness, resentment and anxiety. Leave behind negative speech, perverse thoughts, gossip and unhealthy relationships. Do not be afraid of the descent, for even if you made your bed in Hell, God will be with you (Psalm 139:8). No matter how low you go, Jesus will be there waiting at the bottom.
